Final Project Overview
Following my summary of my project, I will give an overview of my final project by breaking it down into categories of success, failures, and changes that occurred for my project.
Successes
I believe the project contributed knowledge towards an area of academic study. By using research methods to collect data from a small business, I facilitated the industry knowledge to be made aware of. For example, during my interview with Slanky, the founder shared that small venue spaces are a challenge to find in Cambridge, where his brand is based. However, in London, there is no shortage of small music venues, and the decision to hold music events at clothing shops is done so to maintain brand image. This further helps out other small businesses, and as the Slanky founder stated, what is popular amongst the music and creative culture community is “anything but a venue”. Consumers are intrigued by the uniqueness of music events that aren’t held at established music venues.
Another success is the execution of research methods during this project. After in-depth research of ethical issues when carrying out an interview, I feel that during the interview's creation process, I was quite specific not to have loaded or leading questions, which can result in biased answers, as the interviewee may answer with responses they believe the interviewer is looking for.
Failures
A failure that occurred during this project was that initially, in my project brief, I outlined that I wanted to survey the target demographic for Slanky. However, due to the size of the project being 5000 words, I felt it would not have worked. Furthermore, the data I would have been seeking to find from a survey, I found in research from academic literature and other resources. In the future, if I carry out a larger project, I would like to conduct a survey, as surveys were a point of interest to me during my degree.
Changes that Occurred
A change that occurred was that I had originally set out to work with Slanky over many weeks, gathering data and experiences as a researcher and part of the creative team. However, due to extenuating circumstances, I wasn’t able to have as much contact time with Slanky, my project partner. This resulted in a pivot of my project, focusing more on the interview and adding content analysis and using elements of netnography to the project. This helped ensure that I had enough in-depth knowledge and qualitative data for my findings.
